The Problem. Has the recent change in American Black Muslim leadership following the death of Elijah Muhammad caused a loss of appeal of the Black Muslim Movement to the American Black Masses? The three main objectives needed to be achieved in order to accomplish the purpose of this study were: (1) identification of the formal authority and decision-making structures of the Black Muslim Movement under the leadership of Elijah Muhammad and Wallace Muhammad; (2) identification of the distinguishing traits and bases for group solidarity of the Black Muslim Movement under the leadership of Elijah Muhammad and Wallace Muhammad; (3) identification of the leadership style models of Elijah Muhammad and Wallace Muhammad. The importance of the study derives from the need to understand the effect of leadership change and style upon the formal authority and decision-making structure of a contemporary revitalization movement. Method. All data about the Nation of Islam was secured from library research and personal experiences of the investigator who was an active participant in the Nation of Islam. Data about the contemporary World Community of al-Islam in the West was secured from confidential records, taped speeches and lectures, privately published organization literature, selected informants and personal experiences of the investigator who until 1976 was an active participant in the contemporary movement. Subjects were interviewed informally only to determine if the objectives and structure were clearly understood by the general masjid memebership. Results. From the results these conclusions were drawn: (1) Wallace D. Muhammad is making a belief, attitude and structural change in the contemporary Black Muslim Movement based on orthodox Islamic concepts, (2) the contemporary Black Muslim Movement shows no substantial evidence of social disorganization in its line of authority and decision-making structure, (3) the forty percent membership increase and the organization of approximately fifteen new masjids following the death of Elijah imply that the contemporary Black Muslim Movement has not suffered any loss of appeal to the American Black Muslim Movement as a result of the leadership change.Subjects--Topical Terms:
