Much has been written about actors and about musicians, but little scholarly study has been devoted to musicians who perform as actors onstage. This dissertation follows the onstage musician from the Ancient Greeks to the present, showing how this unique type of performer reflected, shaped, and influenced both music and theater in a way that performers in one single discipline cannot. There were musicians playing music on reed flutes, wood drums, and stringed instruments when the first Ancient Greek and Roman plays were performed, and there is evidence to show that these musicians participated in the stage action, as well. The Middle Ages began to involve the instrumental musician further within the action of the drama. The early Roman prototypical characters subsequently evolved into performers in the Renaissance commedia dell'arte. Some of these characters were also onstage instrumentalists; their progeny remain on the stage to this day. The development of opera during the Baroque era added the important notion of the physical placement of instrumental musicians. The Classical era produced the first modern conventions for the onstage opera singer as instrumentalist and the orchestral musician as a theater performer. The theatrical use of musicians was furthered expanded and codified during the nineteenth century. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries have seen an even greater degree of participation by actor-musicians in ever-increasing varieties of theater art. In order to study the onstage instrumental musician, this interdisciplinary study, in addition to utilizing standard secondary sources, will draw upon disparate primary sources: scripts; musical scores; payroll records; employee lists; stage directions; prop lists; programs; libretti; literary references; public records; letters; liner notes; archived and live performances; industry catalogues; personal interviews; personal experience.
