Local economic development contributes to sustainable communities by improving the quality of life for community members. This research examines what strategies economic development professionals use, the indicators they use to measure success, the extent to which they consider social equity and the environment when implementing the strategies and any challenges they faced. I conducted five phone interviews with professionals from economically robust places throughout the country. The findings show that all communities rely on partnerships for their economic development efforts. All but one use marketing to target specific industries. They do not target small businesses but offer them support. Most focus on growth and managing the effects of growth to benefit the economy. Participants mentioned housing availability and affordability, and the need for efficient public transportation as challenges associated with their economic development efforts. These issues are ones that can be tackled with sustainable development principles. Others can learn from these professionals and see how they work to overcome their challenges.
