The purpose of this study was to explore teacher's use of humor in the college classroom and student perception of teacher competence and sociability under conditions of high initial teacher credibility. Perceived teacher competence and sociability, as measured on the Teacher Credibility Measure developed by McCroskey, Holdridge and Toomb (1974), were examined with 3 independent variables. The independent variables were instructor gender, type of humor (tendentious and nontendentious), and condition of humor (related and unrelated to the educational point).Subjects--Topical Terms:

Subjects were 124 undergraduate students enrolled in social science courses, divided into 8 cells. Each cell heard an audiotaped introduction which established the instructor as competent and sociable, and then each cell viewed a videotaped lesson of either a male or female instructor teaching a lesson with one combination of type and condition of humor.

Difference scores were calculated to determine shifts in student perceptions of teacher competence and sociability after they viewed the lessons. Two factorial analyses of variance were performed for the dependent variables, perceived teacher competence and sociability. No significant differences for the main effects were indicated nor were there any significant interactions among the factors for the competency data. Analysis of the sociability data yielded a significant three-way interaction between humor condition, humor type and instructor gender. Significance was also indicated for two of the main effects, type and instructor gender.

The results of this study indicated that when the instructor is unknown to the students, under conditions of high credibility, use of all combinations of type (tendentious and nontendentious) and condition (related and unrelated) of humor resulted in decreased perceived competence and sociability for both the male and female instructor.
