A primary goal of this study was to investigate gender as a salient social category constructed within interaction. Previous research investigating language and gender attempts to define gender differences in talk, or to characterize the interactional styles of women and men, or to explore how gender is 'done' in interaction. In contrast, gender here is conceived as a social category, providing both a conversational resource, in the form of social knowledge through which interlocutors may engage in interaction, and rhetorically situated action, fitted to the interactional task at hand.

The study investigates gender as a discursive practice of the categories "women" and "men" in talk about rape. Talk about rape is particularly salient because the topic itself has an overt orientation to gender specifically in terms of accountability. The purpose is to provide an empirically based analysis of gender as a discursive practice, as revealed through college classroom discussions of rape.

Two college classrooms were audiotaped for a semester. Class discussions specifically on issues of gender were transcribed, eventually narrowed to transcripts specific to discussions of rape. Additionally, students' in-class writings on the topic of rape were included for analysis.

A primary finding was that students discussed rape as a natural part of the world. Consequently, the naturalness and insuperability of rape denies the agency of "men," either as a class category or individuals. "Men" become vehicles of a natural force, and "women" by implication are the 'natural' stimulus or preexisting condition for rape. As "men's" behavior is subsumed within "nature," "women's" behavior is constructed as a response to "natural forces." The focus of rape discussion centers on "women" as therefore responsible for taking appropriate actions to stay safe from the "natural" and ever-present danger of rape.

Gender, conceptualized as categorical incumbency, not only emerged as expectations for behavior, but importantly also entailed belief systems about human nature and agency as specifically gendered. The discursive practice of gender in talk about rape is grounded within the ideological assumptions of patriarchy. Given the foundation of patriarchy to the construct of "masculinity," rape prevention requires dismantling the association of "men" with 'masculinity.'
