Thesis (M.A.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2006.
Addressing aspects of the cultural, social and professional integration of immigrants in Canada, this thesis focuses on the Kazakhstani immigrant intelligentsia currently residing in Toronto. The main argument is that the process of integration in a new homeland involves a complex interrelationship of global migration patterns, social capital, diasporic community and collective identity.

The conceptual backdrop includes primarily Antonio Gramsci's theory on organic intellectuals and the social integration perspectives of S. Eisenstadt, M. Gordon and J. Berry. In addition, perspectives on collective, ethnic and pan-ethnic identities by R. Cohen. C.G. Ibanez and A. Sampaio are also brought to the analysis of empirical data.

The empirical research component concentrates on the qualitative analysis of seventeen narratives by immigrant intelligentsia from Almaty, Kazakhstan of various ethnicities and age brackets. These immigrant intellectuals come to Toronto as a result of numerous migrational dynamics factors that include the attractiveness of Toronto as a global city, the uneven inter-ethnic relationships in Kazakhstan and other social contexts in which migration decision-making occurs in the first place.

This study suggests that the process of social, cultural and professional integration for the Kazakhstani intelligentsia in Toronto, Canada, is fairly harmonious, mostly because of the strong presence of the Russian-speaking community from the former USSR. Also, the group relies for its survival in Toronto on its social capital and a collective post-Soviet identity that it shares with the Russian-speaking community.

However, the ex-Kazakhstanis still face numerous challenges such as finding gainful employment, learning the English language and establishing a more active diasporic community. A list of recommendations suggested by the research participants is offered in the end in order to facilitate a smoother process of integration for future immigrants from Kazakhstan and other countries.
