Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1998.
In this dissertation, I examine how Filipino identity was articulated, reified, and renegotiated on soc.culture.filipino, a newsgroup on the Internet. Filipinos from different locations articulated Filipino identity in relation to various images of the Philippines and U.S. colonialism. By following several debates that ensued, I learned how members of the diaspora established what Filipino identity means with people back home and how people at home forged an identity with members of the diaspora. This study shows that when studying identity, it is important to examine not just the differences between groups (as many scholars tend to do), but how the differences themselves are created.

From 1995 to 1997, I was a participant observer on soc.culture.filipino and I collected over 2000 posts. Using the method of instances, I analyzed various threads of internet discussion to discover what existing discourses the participants drew on to articulate Filipino identity, I found that the participants articulated Filipino identity against their images, experiences, and knowledge of the U.S.-Philippine colonial relationship. Because many participants wished to articulate a unique, Filipino culture and identity, many dichotomized American and Filipino. Debates about cultural values, language, and Filipinas all revolved around this issue. However, because the boundaries between cultures are not fixed, definitions of Filipino were diverse and sometimes contradictory. During this height of the debates, some participants started a “you might be Filipino if….” thread to remedy this confusing situation. My analysis of this thread indicated that the participants sought to transcend contentious issues (e.g., gender) and to bridge the gap between the U.S. and the Philippines.

Because the Internet is constantly in flux, people log in and out of the newsgroup, and most discussions were short-lived, the same topics were re-debated and old issues re-emerged. But, the process was the same. The participants drew on lived and imagined experiences and their knowledge of the U.S.-Philippine colonial relationship to articulate Filipino identity.
