Thesis (M.A.)--York University (Canada), 2007.
This thesis examines how the decision by Asian-Canadian females to undergo blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and/or rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is the product of the complex relationship and negotiation between identity, "self," the body, and "culture." In particular, it examines how Western capitalist consumer culture works to produce a habitus that focuses on individual appearance and lifestyle as markers of identity and status which privilege white, middle class values and aesthetics over others, informing their decision to undergo these particular types of surgeries. Key ideas explored will be the role of Western popular cultural representations of Asian females in affecting Asian-Canadian women's identity negotiation and construction, as well as theories about identity and embodiment from cultural studies, postcolonial and psychoanalytic perspectives.
