Purpose: The aim of the present study is to provide theoretical explanations of the relationship of caregiving and older adults' health (i.e., a life course perspective and Andersen's Behavioral Model). Specifically, this study examines the effect of caring for grandchildren on older adults' well-being in South Korea.

Method: This study utilized the second wave 2008 of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing with a nationally representative sample of 10,254 residents over the age of 45. The first sub-sample was 258 grandparent caregivers and another sub-sample was 8,146 non-caregiving older-adults. Depression was measured with the revised 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies -- Depression Scale (CES-D-10). Another outcome measure, life satisfaction, was taken from domain-specific questions related to health, economic status, and quality of life. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to evaluate many variables presented by the Andersen model. As a post-hoc analysis, the Chow test was employed to inspect different effects of antecedents in two groups (i.e., caregivers and non-caregivers).

Finding: In line with the Andersen model, findings from this study suggested that financial capital (from the enabling factors), physical problems (from the need factors), and health behaviors were associated with levels of depression and life satisfaction. In particular, subjective health status was associated with a high level of life satisfaction among caregivers. Compared to caregivers, non-caregiving older adults indicated that most of the variables in each category were statistically associated with depression and life satisfaction. Lastly, the Chow test result revealed the different effects of antecedents between grandparent caregivers and non-caregivers.
