This dissertation assesses the influences, ramifications, and effects of the Christian missionary movement on adult female prostitution in Thailand. The intent of this study is to evaluate critically the efficacy of the Christian missionary response to prostitution in Thailand in light of the issues and concerns of a cross-cultural and cross-religious social problem. Many factors require an effective response to prostitution in Thailand, but the rampant and devastating spread of HIV and AIDS throughout Thailand, largely as a result of prostitution, demands a realistic, responsible, and effective response as Christian missionaries encounter prostitution in Thailand.

This research study examines significant factors that contribute to the perpetuation of adult female prostitution in Thailand. Such factors include economic realities, religious traditions and beliefs, social, familial, and cultural customs and assumptions, and the impact of foreign sex tourism. Utilizing critical theory, cultural studies, and missiology, I evaluate and analyze how prostitution is perpetuated and understood in Thailand, and how the Christian missionary movement responds to the practice.

I examine three specific missionary organizations and one individual missionary—the Fatima Center, The New Life Center, Rahab Ministries, and Max Ediger—all who address the issue of prostitution in Thailand. I evaluate the efficacy of their various responses based on a three-pronged strategy I consider necessary for effectively redressing prostitution in Thailand. The strategy involves confronting prostitution in Thailand on structural and situational levels, as well as redefining discourses about prostitution in Thailand. I conclude that based on the representative organizations I discuss, Christian missionaries have not fully employed a structural, situational, and redefinitional approach for redressing prostitution in Thailand, and therefore have not effectively confronted the issue.
