Yosemite National Park attracts 3.5 million visitors each year, 90% of whom visit Yosemite Valley, a seven-square mile section of the park. Ranger-led programs are an optimal way for visitors to better connect with the cultural and natural resources of the area and with National Park Service (NPS) personnel, who are fundamental in providing these opportunities. A survey administered to 445 visitors in Yosemite during August and September 2006, included: demographics; past experiences with interpretive programs in Yosemite; motivations for attending ranger-led programs; and program preferences. Visitors segmented were those attending free NPS ranger-led programs.

Ranger naturalist programs are a quintessential piece of Yosemite Valley's past, dating back to 1920. However, the number of people that opt to attend these programs is a small percentage of visitors, approximately 8% when last surveyed in 2005. In an attempt to understand how to better meet the needs of visitors with personal interpretive services (ranger-guided activities), this study examined factors attracting visitors to specific programs. Results indicated that program attendees were predominantly split between first-time and repeat visitors, with most visitors residing in the state of California, (39%); approximately 57% had attended some type of ranger-led program in the past; and most visitors were motivated to attend a program based on its' subject matter or topic.
