Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2014.
This study examined meditation as an intervention to enhance couples' relationship satisfaction. A summary of literature was reviewed to support meditation as an effective tool in working with couples and individuals struggling with emotion regulation. An 8-week meditation program was developed and introduced to five expert judges to evaluate the program design. The treatment model integrated weekly sessions with the instructor and education regarding home and extended practices. The components of the treatment model included the Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised Survey (MSI-R) and the Profile of Mood States Survey (POMS) as a pre and post-test. They were intended to measure the extent/nature of conflict and intensity of negative emotions experienced within a relationship. In addition, a questionnaire consisting of eight Likert-scale questions and two-open ended questions was implemented for the expert judges to expose the advantages and disadvantages of the treatment model. The evaluation of treatment model indicated that meditation may be an effective tool in improving relationship satisfaction.
