Bose-Einstein condensation is a macroscopic quantum phenomenon that is based on the wave nature and indistinguishability of the particles. As the interparticle spacing is smaller than the de Brogile wavelength, all the atoms will macroscopically occupy the ground state to form a Bose-Einstein condensate. In 1995, the Bose-Einstein condensation of the alkali gases was first observed in a magnetic trap. Thereafter, experimental and theoretical investigations on the quantum properties of Bose-Einstein condensates bloomed.

520 $a Quantum entanglement lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. It is a key to quantum nonlocality and also a physical ingredient of quantum information processing. However, quantum entanglement is very fragile and is difficult to observe and generate. On the other hand, the Bose-Einstein condensate is a robust and controllable quantum object; therefore, it is used for generating multi-particle entanglement. Entanglement of Bose-Einstein condensate is an intriguing subject and new phenomena are anticipated.
520 $a In this thesis, we theoretically study the entanglement properties of one-component and two-component condensates trapped in a double-well potential. We will show that quantum entanglement is generated in quantum dynamics and the ground state of the double-well systems. In one-component systems, a spin squeezing type multi-entanglement is found. In two-component systems, we demonstrate the generation of interspecies entanglement and the Schrodinger cat state. Moreover, the relationship between entanglement and other fundamental physical phenomena such as quantum tunnelling is investigated. Our findings lead to deeper understanding of the fundamental role of entanglement in quantum mechanics and are important in the applications of quantum information.
