During the twentieth century British radio presented listeners with news and analysis of public events. Starting with the formal radio talk in the 1920s, this book charts the development of news reporting{C8}and examines certain{C8}staples of the schedule, such as World at One, Woman's Hour, Today, Analysis and File on Four. Chignell also explores J.B. Priestley's brilliant war time radio talks, the crucial role of women like Janet Quigley and Isa Benzie, the dramatic innovations of commercial radio news in the 1970s, and coverage of the Falklands War in the 1980s. Based largely on original and previously unseen written and sound archives, and interviews with former and current radio producers and presenters, Public Issue Radio addresses the controversial question of the political leanings of current affairs programmes and asks if Analysis became an early platform for Thatcherite and Blairite ideas.
