Thesis (M.A.)--Texas Woman's University, 2016.
The purposes of this study were to examine published literature regarding music therapy for persons with severe dementia and to develop an original intervention, Music Therapy Multisensory Stimulation (MT-MSS), which included olfactory, visual, and tactile modalities, and was based on techniques from documented music therapy and multisensory stimulation studies. Eighteen relevant publications were found. The functionality and impact of MT-MSS were tested via a descriptive analysis in which nine participants responded to a 12-item Likert Scale based on their observations of patients receiving the MT-MSS treatment. The results suggested that MT-MSS appeared to have promising symptom management potential for individuals with severe dementia and can be effective as an assessment strategy. Recommendations included needing more publications about music therapy for people in the later stages of dementia and additional research with this particular population.
