Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton University, 2002.
The first chapter looks at the ways in which Hsi-yu chi's rhetoric of enlightenment are related to its folkloric comic images. I propose that the rhetorical mode that characterizes the relation of these two aspects of the novel is one of “seeming enigma”, that is, of the riddle. In order to approach the “riddle-like” rhetoric of the novel, I establish a literary and anthropological context for understanding the origins of the riddle in China. Drawing connections between the ancient no ritual, the fu, and the riddle, I argue that all three are shaped by the same concept of language as magical, language as holding the powers of exorcism.

In the second chapter I take up the concept of “word confusion” and show how this concept works with respect to the mixing of diverse languages in the novel. I describe the various languages and try to provide a sense of the nonsense and novelty that is created when the familiar is placed in the novel's new fantastic world. It is a world that revises the familiar in the light of burlesque, irony, and, occasionally, carnival.

In the third chapter I focus on the language that “vitalizes”, subjugates all the novel's languages to a renewal: its comic folk images, many of which carry strong associations with the no. The study closes with preliminary suggestions about the direction of further research into the novel's “real-life chronotope”. These suggestions are based on an important body of texts that has not yet been considered by scholars in the West. The texts are ritual manuals and lists of entertainments for the sai-she (festivals in honor of the gods) of northern China (more specifically, Shan-hsi province) that were held from mid-Ming to late imperial and early Republican times.
