This dissertation is divided into two sections: the Poetics of Non-self and the Poetry of Presence. In the first part, I develop a theory that accounts for the creative as well as the reading process of lyric poetry. The formulation of this theory is based on an integration of the Lacanian psychoanalytical model and theories of ritual. In my theory, the poetic process can be construed as a "rite of passage," which is characterized by a dialectic between two functions--"regeneration" and "stabilization"; the former is propelled by the human aspiration for the numinous ultimate "other" and thus for a non-self state, while the latter is required by the human attachment to discourse and history. In Lacanian terms, the dialectic is between Desire and the moi. Desire strives for Meaning whereas the moi, being a force of identity fixation, translates Meaning into meaning. Desire alternates between two modes--the Symbolic and the Real--and the moi relies on the Imaginary mode. The outcome of this poetic dialectic enables us to further distinguish three basic categories of lyric poetry--"transcendent poetry," "immanent poetry" and "historic poetry." "Transcendent poetry" and "immanent poetry," their closures accomplished respectively by the Symbolic and the Real, both evoke an experience of the numinous or presence and thus are overwhelmingly devoted to the function of "regeneration." On the other hand, "historic poetry," "failing" to capture the numinous and thus ending with a strong re-assertion of the Imaginary, mainly aims to fulfill the function of "stabilization."Subjects--Topical Terms:

In the second part of this dissertation, I apply the "poetics of non-self" to a discussion of what I term "poetry of presence," the two types of which are "transcendent poetry" and "immanent poetry." It is not surprising that, since "poetry of presence" represents "successful" poetic "attempts," critics have historically considered some form of "poetry of presence" to be the ideal. The main body of the discussion of the "poetry of presence" is devoted to examining how Li Po's transcendent poetry and Wang Wei's immanent poetry--each representing the culmination of one of the two strands within the Chinese "poetry of presence"--disclose and convey "presence."
