This quantitative study examines the relationship between Facebook users' media dependency, perceptions of news credibility, and their concerns of foreign interference in the 2016 and 2020 U.S. Presidential elections. To measure these variables, the study used the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale, News Credibility Scale, and McCaul Brief Worry Scale/McCaul-Severity Scale variant. Media Dependency and Selective Perception served as foundational theories. Audience Gatekeeping, Public Agenda Building, and Cognitive Hacking served as contextual theories. Using a Qualtrics panel, an online national survey of 18-45-year-old Facebook users was conducted in October 2020 just prior to the national elections (n=836).Previous research found media use and media reliance to be positively associated with credibility. This study found similar results in that media dependency and news credibility were found to be correlated and significant. In addition, media dependency and concern of foreign interference were positively correlated with significant findings. However, correlations for news credibility and concern of foreign interference findings were very weak or not statistically significant. Using ANOVA, no significant pattern was found with media dependency and news credibility together to concerns of foreign interference in either election. These results indicate that while media dependency is correlated to concerns of foreign interference, the impact of perceptions of news credibility to concerns of foreign interference is less clear. .
