This study examined college student' and parents' perceptions of cell phone communication in family relationships. The sample included 20 families (20 college students and 32 parents). Online qualitative chat interviews were used with college students and email interviews were used with parents. Grounded theory analysis of online transcripts revealed themes of access, connection, and boundaries for parents and students. Results indicate that college students and parents enjoy the access and convenience of cell phone communication in connecting with one another but students expressed a desire to be in control of initiating contact. Balancing the appropriate level of closeness and independence was something both students and parents indicated was a struggle. Parents expressed a reassurance in knowing that they could contact their student and it provided them with peace of mind. The findings demonstrate the need for further exploration of family cell phone communication dynamics in other family relationships including siblings and younger children.
