The undated, unfinished Newtonian manuscript known as De Gravitatione holds deep significance for the history of philosophy. This is because in De Gravitatione Newton argues explicitly against Descartes and the Cartesian ontology. While De Gravitatione has received a substantial amount of attention since its publication in 1962, it has not been examined in a comprehensive manner. Instead, authors have limited their attention to selections of De Gravitatione, breaking larger arguments into smaller parts without acknowledging their role in the whole. This disregard for the large-scale organization of the arguments in De Gravitatione has led to significant miscomprehension of, and consequentially misrepresentation of, the philosophical content of De Gravitatione ---and has led Robert Palter to ask "contemporary historians and philosophers of science to take a fresh look at Newton's most substantial philosophical text."

It is the purpose of this dissertation to begin to fill this lacuna in the corpus of Newtonian scholarship. After a brief introductory chapter, in Chapter 2, I present the large-scale conceptual structure of De Gravitatione, and show that Newton argues against the Cartesian identity of extension and body by illustrating that the identity entails a faulty account of motion. In Chapter 3, I present Newton's review of the Cartesian account of motion, and show that Newton took great pains to present a review of Cartesian motion that would satisfy Cartesians. In Chapters 4 and 5, I present a detailed analysis of Newton's arguments against Cartesian motion, and show that all of these arguments are conceptual rather than empirical.

Finally, in Chapter 6 I argue that De Gravitatione's place within the Newtonian corpus needs to be revised. I argue that De Gravitatione is best understood as a response to a critical review of the Principia, rather than as the product of an intellectually immature student (as has been suggested by A. R. Hall and M. B. Hall in 1962) or as a dry run to establish the metaphysical foundations of the Principia (as has been suggested by Mary Jo Dobbs in 1982). Thus the date of its composition can be no earlier than 1687.
