Some three million candidates apply to Chinese higher education institutions each year but only about one-fifth gain access. In such an environment of intense competition, issues of student choice and aspiration assume special significance. A key to improved enrollment management lies in better understanding of the factors influencing student choice. Since little is known about student choice in China, this study identifies factors found in U.S. research and adapts them to Chinese context. It surveys 1,102 twelfth grade high school students.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The results show that student choice in China, as in the United States, is strongly associated with student individual characteristics and family background characteristics. Region is most important for student aspirations to go on to higher education and academic grades are the factor most linked to choice of type of institution and field of study. Moreover, each of the two factors is stronger than any other student characteristics variables for all three dependent variables of choice (aspiration, institutional type and field). Type of high school, parental education and parental occupation also are more powerful than gender and age in predicting student choice. Gender has less effect on aspiration for higher education than on choice of type of institution and especially field of study.

Compared to choice in the United States, similarities are more numerous and impressive than differences. In regard to the environmental variables, the picture is more mixed between the two nations, with several similarities and several differences. Major similarities include the importance of parents as advisors, college catalogues as sources of information and academic programs as college characteristics. Major differences involve the relative importance of teachers, availability of information, cost and financial aid and admission requirements. Insofar as student individual and family background characteristics are concerned, sometimes basic similarities between the two nations are found regarding aspiration for higher education but with differences in the choice profile for institutions and fields. For example, the effect of family income on aspiration for higher education is similar between the two nations but it is less important in the choice profile for institutions and fields in China than in the United States.
