Many declines in physical functioning that coincide with aging are associated with physical inactivity. Aquatic exercises have been shown to reduce weight-bearing stresses on skeletal joints which may be advantageous for older individuals. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 12-week aquatic movement exercise intervention on leg flexibility, posture (index of kyphosis), balance and gait. A non-random convenience sample was used, with a pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design. The intervention group (n = 26) participated in aquatic movement exercises twice a week, while the comparison group (n = 14) did not perform aquatic movement exercises. Both groups were well matched for socio-demographics and physical measures at baseline. The exercise group improved significantly in balance, while the comparison group improved significantly in posture. The findings suggest that the exercise intervention may not have been of sufficient specificity or duration to achieve measurable improvements in leg flexibility, posture, and gait.
