Students who speak English as a second language are provided various accommodations to support their linguistic needs. However, they still fall below their native English speaking peers in state and classroom assessments. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine teachers' perspectives on the use of these accommodations and their effectiveness for their English language learners. The study was based on the theories of second language acquisition and accommodations that are provided to bridge the language gap of second language students. These are the accommodations that are used for daily assignments in the classroom as well as those that are used on yearly state assessments. The research question was used to determine which accommodations teachers use and how effective they perceive them to be. The teachers answered questions about their perceptions of whether these accommodations meet the linguistic needs of students as determined by their test scores. The questions were online in Survey Monkey to make them accessible to those who wished to participate. Content analysis was used to interpret the questionnaire. Teachers who participated in the study were from two schools in a small district in eastern Virginia. The results indicated that teachers have different perspectives about which accommodations are effective and which ones should be used. One theme that came out of the study is that the accommodations that are used are similar to those that have been used in the past with special needs students. Another theme is that there does not seem to be a consistency between those that are used in the classroom and those that are used on state assessments. With the input of these teachers and the current studies that have recently been published, recommendations for accommodations that specifically target linguistic needs could be explored in future studies.
