Light duty gasoline vehicles (LDGV) are estimated to contribute 40% of the total on-road mobile source tailpipe emissions of particulate matter (PM) in California. To improve inventory estimates for mobile source PM, additional data is needed to better understand the contribution of gasoline vehicles. This dissertation provides the first evaluation of PM emissions from modern low emitting LDGVs and an investigation of techniques for identifying high emitting LDGVs in the on-road fleet in California. A total of twelve LDGVs which meet the California LEV II standard were tested over Federal Test Procedure (FTP) to determine their PM mass emission rate, particle number, and chemical composition of these emissions. PM emissions of eight vehicles designed to be representative of various kinds of smoke levels were investigated using chassis dynamometer tests over Unified Cycle, Smog Checks with addition of a PM measurement, and remote sensing device (RSD) measurements over a test track. PM emissions of on-road LDGV fleet were also evaluated using RSDs. PM mass emission rates of modern low emitting vehicles were found to be less than 1 mg/mi, which is well below the LEV II standard of 10 mg/mi. These clean vehicles show very low emission levels of elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and limited species of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes, which were found to be mainly in the semi-volatile phase. Particle number emission rates of these low emitting vehicles are on the order of 10 11∼1012 particles/mi. High emitting vehicles still emit hundreds to thousands times higher PM mass and particle number compared to low emitting vehicles. Remote sensing devices (RSD) were evaluated as a potential means for identify high PM emitting vehicles on the road. The initial information on these systems indicates that further development of the systems is needed before they can be applied to identify high emitting vehicles in the field.Subjects--Topical Terms:
