Unbalanced input voltages and harmonic components can have major negative effects on modern ac-dc power converters and their connected loads. In the first section of this thesis, new techniques are presented for analyzing the effects of unbalanced voltage sag events. Analyzed effects include: (1) unbalanced input currents that stress the diode bridge rectifiers and input protective devices such as fuses, contactors and circuit breakers; (2) injection of a second harmonic voltage component onto the dc link voltage (120 Hz for 60 Hz system) that increases the electrical stresses on the dc link inductor (if used) and the dc link electrolytic capacitors; and (3) development of significant amounts of 120 Hz ripple torque in an induction machine adjustable-speed drive (ASD), increasing the mechanical and thermal stresses. A variety of solutions for voltage unbalance and sag mitigations that have been described in the literature are reviewed. A combination of analytical, simulation, and experimental results are presented in order to thoroughly investigate the details of these input unbalanced voltage effects.

520 $a In the second section of the thesis, cost-effective and computationally-efficient techniques for estimating and eliminating sinusoidal disturbances are developed that demonstrate the effectiveness of disturbance rejection control in high-power active rectifier systems with slower PWM switching frequencies (e.g., 5 kHz) and limited current controller bandwidth. The targeted power quality disturbances on the utility side include input voltage harmonics, voltage unbalance, and input inductor unbalance. Since the active rectifier is in series with the source and the load, there is no need to add additional hardware to achieve the desired harmonic elimination. The input positive- and negative-sequence voltages are extracted using the new observer methods and negative-sequence currents are injected to eliminate the dc link 120 Hz ripple component caused by the unbalance. The observer-based disturbance rejection methods are demonstrated to be very effective with all three types of disturbances when they are present either individually or simultaneously, even under conditions of input inductor value variations of 30%. Simulation results are verified experimentally using a 15 hp adjustable-speed drive system that includes an active front-end (AFE) voltage-source converter coupled to a dSpace controller.
