The purpose of this study was to determine the important professional behaviors of athletic trainers, to determine the professional behaviors of athletic training students upon completion of the athletic training education program, and, based on these determinations, to develop an instrument to evaluate the professional behaviors of athletic training students. This study was conducted in three phases: A, B, and C. During the Phase A, eight athletic training educators completed a survey that contained a list of professional behaviors derived from the literature as well as the professional documents of the athletic training profession. Respondents rated each behavior in terms of clarity and importance to professionalism in athletic training.

In Phase B, 424 athletic trainers completed a survey that contained the professional behaviors that were rated as important in Phase A. Respondents in Phase B rated each of the professional behaviors in terms of importance and the point in career that athletic trainers should exhibit the behavior. In Phase C, the respondents were 230 athletic training students. Respondents completed a survey that contained the same professional behaviors as in Phase B. Respondents in Phase C rated each behavior on the frequency with which the student performed the behavior during the clinical field experience and on the point in career. The findings revealed that athletic trainers rated almost all professional behaviors as important. The students generally believe that most professional behaviors should be exhibited upon admission to the ATEP. Both the students and athletic trainers indicated that professional behaviors related to confidentiality, organization, communication and ethics should be exhibited upon admission to the ATEP. Both groups felt that professional behaviors were not initially exhibited after more than three years of practice. Finally, the students believe that they perform most professional behaviors very often during their clinical field experience.

Based on the results of the three phases of this study, an evaluation tool, the Athletic Training Assessment of Professional Behaviors (AT-APB), was then developed. It is comprised of 15 professional behaviors that are grouped into five categories. Further research should focus on investigating the validity of perceptions of ATS in terms of professional behaviors and on examining the validity and utility of the AT-APB.
