The purposes of this study were to systematically analyze and describe the coaching behaviors of more and less successful high school boys' tennis coaches from the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area, to compare the findings of the more successful coaches to the less successful coaches, and to compare the behaviors of the tennis coaches with results of similar studies of coaches of team sports. Furthermore, the study was designed to evaluate athlete response to coaching instruction, and to compare responses of the athletes of more successful coaches to responses of the athletes of less successful coaches.

A 14 behavior category observation instrument, the Arizona State University (ASU) Observation Instrument, was used to compile data on nine coaches (five more successful, and four less successful). Data were recorded by time sampled event recording, with each coach being observed during pre-season/early season, mid-season, and late season, for a total of three observations per coach.

The tennis coaches demonstrated more instructional behaviors than any other behavior, but spent more five-second intervals in the other category than in any other category. Other, Management, and Silence occupied almost 75% of the total intervals. The primary sequence of behaviors for all tennis coaches was Instruction-Silence-Instruction.

Comparisons of the data from this study to results of previous studies showed that there was little similarity between the more successful tennis coaches and winning high school football coaches, and little similarity between both the tennis coaches as a whole and the more successful tennis coaches when compared to a successful high school boys' basketball coach. There was a marked similarity, however, between the less successful tennis coaches and non-winning football coaches.
