Goal structure theory suggests that three different goal structures, competitive, cooperative and individualistic, exist within organized academic and physical activity settings. Achievement motivation theory identifies two fundamental performance orientations, ego and mastery, that influence commitment to goal achievement within these settings. The purpose of this study was to explore the ability of fourty-one children, ages seven through fifteen, to distinguish between different goal structured badminton activities using the Perception of Goal Structure Questionnaire. The relationship between these perceptions and scores on a modified version of the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (Duda & Nicholls, 1992) were examined.

Results supported children's ability to distinguish between goal structures and indicated a positive correlation between mastery orientation and the perception cooperation and individualism. No significant correlations were found between ego and mastery orientation and the perception of competition, or between ego orientation and the perception of cooperation and individualism.
