Objective. Moderation Management (MM) is a mutual aid support group helping problem drinkers reduce drinking to non-harmful levels. It is delivered in two program formats---online and face-to-face support groups; some members use both formats. 520 $a Objective. Moderation Management (MM) is a mutual aid support group helping problem drinkers reduce drinking to non-harmful levels. It is delivered in two program formats---online and face-to-face support groups; some members use both formats. This study evaluated members' descriptive characteristics, self-reported quantity/frequency of drinking, dependence, life problems, use of program components, and outcome.
520 $a Method. All active members in the online and F2F support groups were identified and invited to complete a survey. Of the 549 members identified, 303 responded (55%). Two hundred seventy-two respondents were eligible for analysis.
520 $a Results. On average, members were 44 years old, 67% female, 98% White, 89% US residents, 80% employed, 94% college educated, and 77% with an income over $5 0,000 per annum. Thirty-one percent had prior AA experience. The baseline mean number of drinks per week was 34 (SD 20, range 0--105), dependence score of a possible 39 was 11 (SD 5, range 0--24), and number of life problems of a possible 6 was 1.9 (SD 1.4, range 0--6). For ongoing members, the average time in MM was 24 months (SD 27, range 1--125). Of a possible 15 program component categories, an average of 8.7 had been used (SD 2.6). Members of F2F groups were significantly older, drank less, and had completed the 30-day abstinence period more frequently than members of the other two groups. Those participating in both formats had more life problems, had sought more help prior to MM, and had more personal member contact during MM than members in OL and F2F formats. Members had used program components other than outside contact and the abstinence period, equally, at frequencies of 60--96%. Drinking quantity, degree of dependence, and number of life problems were all decreased post-MM by at least 50% across all groups.
520 $a Conclusions. The success of members in MM demonstrates that many problem drinkers can reduce their drinking to non-problematic levels. This study supports the inclusion of lowered thresholds and harm reduction in other alcohol treatment programs.
