Student-instructor meetings as a strategy for increasing ABE student success.
- 122 p.

Thesis (M.Ad.Ed.)--St. Francis Xavier University (Canada), 2003.
In the literature, there is widespread recognition and concern that Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs typically have low rates of retention. The research emphasizes the need for support for ABE learners, but rarely specifies the types of supports that are most helpful. This action research study examines if the opportunity to meet regularly with an instructor has a positive effect on ABE student success.

During the 3½-month period of this study, students in a self-paced ABE program at a British Columbia college were encouraged to sign up each month for a meeting with their instructors. The purpose of the meetings was to provide an opportunity for discussion of students' progress and any other course concerns. More students remained actively involved in their courses and were more likely to complete them during the study period than in previous semesters. In a follow-up questionnaire, students expressed their satisfaction with the meetings. Both students and their instructors valued the opportunities to meet privately and to address issues that might otherwise have been unvoiced or unnoticed. Through improved communication, instructors learned more about their students and gained greater insights to their barriers to successful participation. They could then provide better student support.

Implementing regular meetings could be considered for other self-paced ABE programs, as well as for other types of ABE and adult learning programs. Learners often need help in assessing their progress, so may benefit from similar opportunities to meet with instructors to discuss their concerns.
