This study investigated how Taiwanese women could learn from their participation in social action. In particular, I focused on the women in the Homemakers' Union and Foundation (HUF). Through their active participation, these women's experiences resulted in personal and social transformation. As a member of HUF, I set a goal to document HUF participants' ongoing development through a critical reflection of other women's, and my own, experiences. I attempted to find out whether, and how, women can connect with each other and collaboratively work to create a civil society in Taiwan.

I employed phenomenology, from a feminist standpoint, to project themes that might illustrate significant learning by the women who had similar experiences. Descriptive analysis helped me better understand the meaning of women's participation in social action.

There were three major findings from this study. First, HUF members, as homemakers and mothers, initiated and sustained the social movement. Motherwork—living and working with and for children—became the main force to mobilize and continue the movement. The second finding was related to their inquiry. Participatory research was commonly adopted as the learning process. HUF participants were knowledge producers, and they reconstructed knowledge through their life experiences. The third finding centered on transformative learning, which happened in accordance with Taiwanese women's participation in the organization, study circles, picket-line protests, and communities.

This study contributes to and enriches theories of social movement learning, adult transformation, and feminist theory. First, HUF can be the model of a learning space in which adult women learn, develop, and transform their perspectives. Second, this research showed that each woman involved in HUF was a learner and was encouraged to share her ideas. Learning opportunities were open to all, inside and outside HUF. Finally, HUF's structure well represented bottom-up leadership. Sharing with others replaced leading. Women's passionate concerns for building a civil society were the driving forces for inspiring their activism for social justice.
