In this study, the gas-liquid interface of halide-free 1,3-dialkylimidazolium alkyl sulfates [RMIM][R-OSO3] with R chain lengths comprising one to four carbon atoms has been studied systematically by the surface-specific sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy and surface tension measurements. From the analysis of the SFG spectra, it was observed that the vibrational modes from the methyl groups of both component ions were present. These results indicated that both ions occupy the first layer of the gas-liquid interface. Furthermore, the methyl groups are directed away from the liquid phase into the gas phase.

For ionic liquids dried in vacuum to ≤ 5x10-5 Torr, the cation appeared to be oriented such that the imidazolium ring lies parallel to the interfacial plane with its corresponding alkyl chain extended towards the gas phase. In contrast, for a symmetric [MMIM]+ cation, the C2 axis is parallel to the surface plane.

The SFG results are further supported by surface tension measurements. Through this analysis, it was shown that the surface tension of the ionic liquid is inversely related to the alkyl chain length in the imidazolium cation with a specified anion. A similar trend is observed when the alkyl chain of the anion is modified and the cation is fixed.

Based on the SFG and surface tension data, an increase in the number of methylene group resulted to an increase in the order and packing of the surface layer. This may be due to an increase in van der Waals interactions of the longer alkyl chains. Furthermore, it was shown that the addition of benzene into the ionic liquid affected the surface orientation of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic ionic liquids.
