Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2015.
Drawing on an ability-motivation-opportunity perspective, as well as on expectancy and person-organization fit models of employee attraction and retention, I develop theory that suggests generally positive effects of star performers on their coworker's performance, attraction to the organization, and retention within it. I evaluate hypotheses surrounding these effects in three professional athletics contexts---Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, and the National Hockey League. I find evidence for a generally positive and persistent effect of star performers on coworker performance. Results also indicate that these positive effects are stronger among non-stars characterized by greater ability. By contrast, I find relatively little support for expectations surrounding a star influence on coworker sorting (i.e., attraction and retention).
