Are you financially better off now than you were a year ago, or worse off now? Polls and surveys often ask people to make comparisons across time. Such temporal comparisons comprise 40% of the University of Michigan's Index of Consumer Sentiment, a measure widely followed by both policy makers and investors. I contend such measures of opinion are biased because the direction of temporal comparison places greater focus on one time frame versus another. I show this temporal focalism bias for such judgments, where the present (past) is overweighted when the present (past) is the focus of the question. The temporal focalism bias can attenuate and even reverse the conclusions of common questions from Gallup polls (study 1). I rule in a differential weighting mechanism using path analyses (study 2). Moreover, temporal focalism has downstream effects for consumer behavior, including skewing future purchase intentions (study 3). In the last study, I show that attitude certainty moderates the temporal focalism bias and downstream judgments in a political election context (study 4). General discussion highlights where temporal focalism research stands now and to which directions future research will traverse.
