The challenge of aligning IT and business continues to be an important strategic initiative for organizations. Strategic alignment maturity is a concept that focuses on the relationship between IT and business functions in an organization to achieve the business objectives. Achieving alignment requires IT staff to have sufficient business understanding of their core operations and business staff to have sufficient understanding of technical knowledge of IT solutions being used in their organization. Alignment is increasingly important as organizations expand the use of IT to gain business advantage by enabling/driving key business strategies. The growth of Indian IT service organizations has been possible not just because India is a less expensive alternative, but also because of the well planned strategy of building and marketing the domain skills adopted by these IT service organizations. They have taken steps for market penetration by expanding their global presence and by acquiring strategically important companies abroad. The outsourced business model has incorporated certain complementary organizational capabilities such as the human resource ability to scale up quickly in response to growth in demand, software process management capabilities, and the ability to manage global operations. The purpose of this research will be to leverage the concepts of strategic alignment maturity in the context of Indian IT service organizations to assess whether IT enables or inhibits firm performance with respect to business transformation. Using the results of a survey from 15 organizations (90 Indian business and IT executives), this research tests the premise underlying Luftman's Strategic Alignment Maturity model within the context of Indian IT service organizations. Analyzing the alignment maturity would provide significant insights on how firms are organizing for global competition today. This research provides insights into the following areas of research regarding the Strategic Alignment Maturity Model in the Indian IT service organizations: (1) A positive correlation between higher levels of Strategic Alignment Maturity and higher levels of performance measures such as ROA, ROI, ROE, NPM, and human capital (Revenue/Employee). (2) Differences in the perception Strategic Alignment Maturity between IT and business executives. (3) The Strategic Maturity Alignment of Indian IT service companies are higher than the benchmarked global companies. (4) Empirical evidence for the usefulness of Strategic Alignment Maturity Model as an appropriate tool for assessing the alignment maturity of Indian IT service industry and shows the impact of performance measures by investing in IT. (5) Even though all the 15 organizations are at SEI CMM level 5, the Strategic Alignment level is at level 4; hence room for improvement on strategic initiatives.
