This study was accomplished by a quantitative research method. The intent of this study was to investigate family relationships by examining problematic communication within the marital relationship while concurrently assessing parent-child relationship quality from the parent's viewpoint. One spouse from a marital dyad, with at least one biological child, between the ages of three and 15 years old, with their spouse, made up the 90 website-based participants of this study. All data was collected by self-report questionnaire. The number of True responses on the Four Horsemen Questionnaire, length of time married, gender, race, and current use of psychotropic medication and/or counseling, were the predictor variables. Total score on the Parent-Child Relationship Inventory (PCRI) was the outcome variable in this study. Multiple linear regression analysis results support the study hypothesis: The number of True responses on The Four Horsemen Questionnaire plus length of time married, gender, race, and psychotropic medication with or without psychotherapy does predict the total score on the Parent-Child Relationship Inventory. A stepwise backward regression revealed the Four Horsemen Questionnaire as the strongest predictor of the outcome measure however the other predictor variables did not prove to be significant. This study lends support to studies on spillover, parental acceptance and rejection, and triadic dissonance, and recommends further research associated with the pre-divorce phase and custody concerns in the marital relationship.
