Functional Communication Training (FCT) combines differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors and extinction procedures to decrease problem behaviors. Despite being proven successful as a treatment for reducing problem behaviors, FCT does not directly address resurgence of problem behaviors when the FCR is exposed to extensive extinction conditions that are likely to occur in natural settings after FCT is completed. The current study sought to evaluate how establishing strict discriminative control over the FCR with the use of a multiple schedule in a stimulus context other than the one in which problem behaviors previously resulted in reinforcement would: (a) lessen the likelihood that problem behaviors are inadvertently reinforced by the FCR, (b) allow the s-delta to be used when the FCR is exposed to an extended extinction period, and therefore, (c) mitigate the resurgence of problem behaviors. The effects of a multiple-schedule FCT intervention with a rigorous extinction challenge were tested with schedule characteristics developed from Nevin and Shahan's (2011) Equation 7 of behavioral momentum theory.
