My dissertation begins from the concern that the women's movement is in a transitional period that crucially needs reinvigoration. I identify two problems of disconnection that must be addressed to achieve such ends. First, the profound lack of historical consciousness that pervades the upcoming generation must be overcome because it includes a failure to recognize the longstanding structure of inequity that continues to impede women's progress. It also represents an ignorance of women's previous accomplishments and contributions toward transformation. The second problem of disconnection is located within feminist theory itself. There is a discontinuous narrative of the women's movement that presents it as a tradition of distancing and disclaiming, rather than as a progression of overlapping and parallel initiatives. Additionally, within feminist theory there is a perceived rift between theory and practice. Ultimately, these kinds of disconnections undermine the solidarity that must underlie any transformative endeavor. What is needed to strengthen the next generation of feminism is a remedy to the current lack of historical consciousness and the fissures in feminist theory. To inspire the necessary indignation and gratitude that propel social and political action, and to rectify the gaps within feminist theory that render it inadequate to guide and organize such action, I argue that the incorporation of a progressive memorial dimension to feminist thought is imperative. My theory of remembrance extends beyond the traditional accounts of memory found in the Western philosophic canon, and highlights the distinctive practical methodologies that have been operative in the previous phases of the women's movement. In order to align the present with the past, and to restore a sense of unified purpose and affiliation, I advocate for a model of curation. Taking on a memorial sensibility in the third wave as a form of curatorship requires the new generation to become responsible for the guardianship of the accomplishments made by women in the past, and to use them as a source of inspiration and agenda in the present. As stewards of the collective past of women, the third wave must uncover and create new representations that urge further advocacy for future women.
