The purpose of this study was to explore and document the process of playing, improvising, composing, and digitally recording music with an adolescent with special needs. From my experiences as a support worker for adolescents with special needs, I found that they had few opportunities to play music despite their desire to do so. Studies dealing with music performance, improvisation, composition, or recording are sparse in special education research. Drawing on designs used by Stauffer (2001) and Wiggins (1996), this study employed the method of a single participant case study in which the participant attended two 40 minute music sessions a week over the course of three months. The participant was an 18 year-old male with Down syndrome who had limited musical training. The participant demonstrated that he was able to learn how to play instruments, improvise lyrics and melodies to accompaniment, and compose his own songs using a computer composition program. The findings from this study can help to inform those who support adolescents with special needs in a musical context.
