The highly fragmented coastal salt marsh plant communities of southern California have been invaded by several species of iceplants from the family Aizoaceae. The goal of this study was to better understand the mechanisms behind this invasion and its impacts on native plants. Greenhouse experiments revealed that seed germination is an unlikely mechanism for iceplants to become established in salt marshes, however, Carpobrotus spp. and Malephora crocea demonstrated an ability to become established via vegetative fragments. Furthermore, field surveys of iceplant populations throughout 25 of southern California's coastal salt marshes revealed the wide distributions and predictable occurrences of Carpobrotus spp, Malephora crocea, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, and Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum within the native salt marsh plant community. Based on these findings, methods for proper removal and eradication of each species must be developed in order to control this invasion and help in restoring the natural integrities of this unique wetland habitat.
