Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2006.
The purpose of this study was to explore the psychological, social, and spiritual well-being of patients who diagnosed with a terminal illness. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 12 participants who were either in a hospice program or were diagnosed with a terminal prognosis. Results suggest that patients diagnosed with a terminal illness may not be suffering psychologically, socially, or spiritually. Although some patients did admit to suffering, the findings suggest that most patients continue to find meaning in their lives through relationships, activities and a religious or spiritual background. As physical functioning diminished, coping strategies were adapted to meet the needs of the patient that effectively assisted them to relieve distress. It is recommended that practitioners address the psychological, social, and spiritual needs of the terminally ill patient and to acknowledge them as a whole person, recognizing what it is that brings meaning, value, and dignity to the patient's lives.
