This study explores the resiliency narratives of academically successful African-American men who have attained advanced degrees despite having encountered difficult circumstances. Since the researcher's focus was on the participants' experiences, a grounded theory methodology incorporating a semi-structured interview design was implemented as an exploratory approach that could lead toward theoretical development. The researcher conducted 13 interviews to collect the men's descriptions of their experiences throughout their academic tracks, seeking to gain insight on strengths, coping strategies, and other related processes of resilience that shielded these men from adversity within their environment at home, school, or society and helped them succeed academically. Their experiences of triumph and challenge are presented.

Data are presented by categories and concepts. A total of six categories--- I Saw, Something Going On, Finding My Way, Important People, Responsibility/Expectation, and Opportunity---and 34 concepts are identified. The researcher compares these results with the Wolin and Wolin (1993) resiliency model. While four resiliencies---Morality, Independence, Creativity , and Humor---were present in at least one participant, three of the seven codified resiliencies in the model, Insight, Initiative, and Relationships, directly compared with three of the study categories.
