Cognitive style is considered to be a personality trait by some and a fluctuating state-dependent quality by others. Both are characteristics of cognitive style, and are represented by the constructs of integrative complexity and conceptual complexity. Researchers of integrative complexity focus on its state-dependent qualities, and demonstrate how the construct fluctuates according to the situation. Specifically, situational factors such as war, stress, context, and crisis are related to different levels of integrative complexity (e.g., Levi & Tetlock, 1980; Porter & Suedfeld, 1981). On the other hand, conceptual complexity is often assumed to be a stable trait by many researchers, but this assumption has yet to be empirically tested. An additional problem lies in the fact that even though integrative complexity and conceptual complexity are both thought to be distinct characteristics of cognitive style, researchers frequently use the terms interchangeably even though each implies different assumptions, measurement procedures, and coding schemes. These differences are important as they highlight contradictory expectations related to other personality characteristics and to cognitive style overall. The current research project addresses these issues through four related studies on United States presidents spanning the history of the Executive Office. Through the use of historiometric methods and multilevel modeling, as well as a detailed psychobiographical example, the studies offer findings related to the nature of cognitive style, the specific situations that affect cognitive processes, and the relationship between cognitive style and other personality traits.
