520 $a Breast cancer is the most common malignancy for women in the United States. For women with breast cancer, positive social support from both the partner and treatment team has been shown to improve adjustment, promote emotional well-being, and reduce the fear of recurrence. This study examined the joint effects of a patient's perception of social support from her husband and treatment team, a connection that has not been previously studied.
520 $a After controlling for negative affect (NA), a breast cancer patient's perception of her husband's social support and marital satisfaction were significantly related to each other and negatively related to distress. Treatment team social support and husband social support were positively related. After controlling for NA, a breast cancer patient's perception of positive social support on the part of the treatment team was also negatively related to distress. The years since treatment did not moderate distress as expected.
520 $a A novel finding was an interaction between a patient's perception of her husband's social support and treatment team's social support such that a patient with low husband social support was likely to experience more distress with strong treatment team support. This result was labeled a contrast effect. It is hypothesized that by experiencing the contrast between high treatment team social support and low social support from her husband, the patient could have clearer understanding regarding healthy and unhealthy social support. This may create a discontent and distress related to her marital relationship. The research also supported the spillover effect in which the effect of one domain of social support (positive or negative) spills over to the other.
520 $a The findings from this study encourage cancer care centers to educate husbands and partners and the medical treatment team concerning social support, to include them in treatment, and to offer couple enrichment as a standard of care for those going through treatment.
