This research provides insight into the experience of the storyteller when sharing a personal story about one's work. The research was carried out at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), part of the operations of the California Institute of Technology, which operates JPL under a contract with NASA. JPL is a federally funded research and development center dedicated to the robotic exploration of space. As a JPL employee and founder of the JPL Stories program at the site, I had entree to JPL employee storytellers. My research engaged various storytellers in in-depth interviews about their workplace storytelling experiences.

The literatures reviewed examine the significant role and importance of stories in individual, collective, and organizational meaning-making, including the self, personal stories, motivation to share stories, story performance, organizational storytelling, knowledge sharing in learning organizations, and collective knowledge. These topics follow a circular, cyclical path, which moves from the personal to the organizational.

The study used a phenomenological approach to a series of interviews with 12 participants describing their lived experience with storytelling. Three approaches describe and interpret the data: a series of stories drawn from the participants' words, visual-portrait collages of imagery from the participant's words and stories, and an exploration of themes which emerged from the data and the literature. Similar to the path of the literatures, the themes of the storytelling experience transition from the personal to the organizational, and the individual to the collective.

The final theme emerging from the interviews focuses on a change of consciousness within the storyteller, revealing that the experience of performing workplace stories and talking about that experience develops an awareness of the power of sharing what is personal about one's work, internally focused on authenticity and accomplishment, and externally focused on connection with and empowerment of others.
