The purpose of this study is to evaluate the utility of a code of conduct in helping Johnstone Strait whale watching operators conduct their environmental stewardship roles. Specific objectives are to evaluate the utility of the Johnstone Strait code of conduct in encouraging compliance to agreed upon guidelines, and to determine the most effective methods of encouraging such behavior.

520 $a This research draws upon existing literature to establish criteria for assessing the utility of a code of conduct. The code of conduct was developed by the commercial whale watching operators of Johnstone Strait, British Columbia in conjunction with researchers at the Centre for Tourism Policy and Research, Simon Fraser University. The research then uses a survey instrument to assess operator perceptions' concerning the utility of the code of conduct in encouraging compliance with agreed upon stewardship guidelines. The survey results suggest that the code of conduct is more effective than government regulations in encouraging operators to follow whale watching code guidelines. As well, the findings indicate that the code is very effective in helping operators communicate with each other, and encourage them to implement conservation practices in their operations.
