The largest ethnic group in California that represents about half of the total K-12 population is Latino students. They are the highest risk for school failure than any other ethnic group. The educational attainment of these students is considerably lower than any other ethnic group in California and the United States. However, there is an academic intervention program, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), that has proven to provide educationally underrepresented Latino students with "social capital" that allows them to produce positive academic outcomes.
