Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study is to replicate the work of Smith in the areas of social stratification and inequality. In particular, this study examines theoretical sociological views of class as a function of structural position, economic sector and race with their expected impacts upon world view indicators. The data used for this study was provided by the 2000 General Social Survey.

520 $a Findings and conclusions. The findings reveal very weak correlations between class/race and world views, similar to the findings of Smith. This leads to a conclusion that there exists a need in sociology to reexamine traditionally held theoretical views by which class and social inequality are conceptualized. In particular, other emerging factors such as education, family social background and other demographic factors may need to be given more weight in sociological research into stratification.
