This paper describes case study research designed to examine the relationship between critical thinking and asynchronous online learning. Using case study methodology, research was conducted on two fully online asynchronous courses provided by one community college. Critical thinking outcomes were conceptualized and integrated with course content and teaching strategies. Rubrics were designed to assess each participant's critical thinking ability based on particular assignments and course requirements. Participants were surveyed to determine their precourse critical thinking dispositions and their postcourse perceptions regarding their ability to think critically as a result of their participation in the online courses. This study found that when critical thinking is clearly defined and conceptualized within a course it can be both promoted and qualitatively assessed.
