In this paper, I formulate and estimate a semiparametric finite horizon dynamic programming model in which, at any given point in time, credit constrained, heterogeneous rational agents, who maximize the expected present discounted value of log earnings, net of moving costs, have to choose among several distinct locations.

Using a subsample of household head males from the 2001 wave of the PNAD, a comprehensive Brazilian national household survey, I compare the ability of the model and of alternative specifications to replicate the major patterns of internal migration in Brazil. The results suggest that heterogeneity and a more flexible distribution of the errors are crucial to replicate the asymmetric and leptokurtic density of observed log earnings and that the dynamic model outperforms traditional reduced form specifications employed by the literature.
